C.K.S. Memorial Hall and Honor Guards

The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall was opened to the public in 1980. The design of the architecture was based on the Sun-Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing. The blue and white colors represent Taiwan's national emblem "Blue sky and white sun". The steps up to the main hall count 89 which was the age of the president Chiang as he passed away. The best way to get to this place is with Metro Green or Red line. The closest station is Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall.

The Main Gate

The Chinese inscription of the main gate used to be 大中至正 meaning Great Centrality and Perfect Uprightness. However, it is now declares the plaza Liberty Square. The characters in the inscription are placed in left-to-right sequence to follow modern practice in Taiwan. (By ancient Chinese tradition, the characters should have been placed in right-to-left sequence.)

The Memorial Hall

The main building stands at east side end of the Liberty square. The ground level of the memorial houses a library and a museum documenting Chiang Kai-shek's life and career, with exhibits detailing Taiwan's history and development. The upper level contains the main hall, in which a large statue of Chiang Kai-shek is located, and where the guard changing ceremony regularly takes place on top of the hour each day.

The Honor Guards

The guard change takes place on top of each hour every day. It has become the most popular tourist attraction within the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall.

While the guards are performing during the ceremony, the only sound can be heard is the synchronized clicking of the soldiers’ boots entering the hall. They march to a silent beat as their arms swing forward and their legs raise in perfect harmony. The new guards and the remaining perform a series of rifle movements before they change the place.

↑The plainclothes guard

It is so amazing to watch the guards do their ‘dance’. Some might think they will start with Michael Jacksons Moonwalk every minute. The plainclothes guard was walking around the chambre to keep the order. To ensure you get a good place in the first row, you should arrive at least 15 minutes before the ceremony.

The honor guards are the honor of our nation and the pride of our people. They are striving so hard every day for perfectly performing their duty, and hope to leave a lasting positive impression of Taiwan in the hearts and minds of the visitors from all around the world.

The Lowering-flag ceremony

The flag-lowering ceremony takes place at 6:10 pm every day. Because the timing of the music is fixed, the guards have to make sure the flag will be completely lowered when the music stops.

The Park

There is forested parks to the right and left side of the Liberty square and behind the Memorial Hall. Each side of the park has a small pond which are named "Yunhan Pond" (雲漢池) and "Guang Hua Pond" (光華池) respectively.

The ponds are a heaven serving as the home for squirrels, birds, fish, turtles and cranes. A small arched bridge divides the ponds and from the top of the bridge visitors can see nice scenery. The ponds are filled with a lot of colorful koi. Children will especially enjoy feeding giant koi fish in the garden pond.
